The Punjab government today decided to remit jail terms of prisoners from one year to two months on the auspicious occasion of Baisakhi festival which falls on Thursday.

However, the remission would not be granted to those convicted of heinous crimes, an official spokesman said.

A decision in this regard was taken by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Badal at a high-level meeting here, he said.

The remission of one year would be granted to those who were awarded 10 to 20 years imprisonment, the spokesman said.

The remission of nine months would be granted to those who were sentenced for seven to 10 years and six months to those serving jail terms of five to seven years, he said.

Sentences of convicts awarded jail terms of three to five years and less than three years would be remitted by three and two months respectively.

At the meeting, Badal was told that newly-constructed jails at Faridkot, Nabha, Mansa and Kapurthala would be handed over to concerned authorities by May-end.

The chief minister directed the health department to provide adequate medical and para-medical staff in hospitals in Faridkot and Nabha jails.

A drug de-addiction centre for prisoners would also be set up, the meeting was informed.
