The Peoples Democratic Party attacked Omar Abdullah for his comments on the WikiLeaks cables relating to alleged human rights violations in Kashmir in 2005, saying the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister should be the last man to speak on the issue.

"Omar should be last man to speak on the issue concerning WikiLeaks disclosure about tortures in Kashmir. He has converted the Kashmir Valley into a prison," PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti told reporters tonight.
"During his regime, even though militancy is down, there have been over hundred killings, thousands have been injured and there have been large scale arrests," she said.
Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah today distanced himself from the WikiLeaks cable emanating from the US embassy in Delhi and indirectly blamed the then government, led by opposition PDP.
Mehbooba further said it was PDP that inherited Jammu and Kashmir when militancy was at its peak.
"We nourished Kashmir with the healing touch policy. The then PDP-Congress government led by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed brought tremendous improvement in the security situation, militancy and ended the fear of surrendered militants, STFs and POTAs," she said.
In a rare briefing with the then US envoy to India, the International Committee of the Red Cross had in 2005 expressed concern over alleged human rights violations in Kashmir and spoke about torture in detention centres, though it pointed out that the situation was much better than in the 1990s.
