Though not exactly on the route of the high-voltage Rath Yatra which is just three days away, the collapse of a two-storyed building in Dariapur sent shockwaves among people on Friday morning.

The building in Popatiyawaad area was just a few metres away from the main Rath Yatra route that passes through the heavily congested minority-dominated Dariapur.

The two-storyed building came crashing down early on Friday morning, killing two children and injuring five people.

The building in Mall ni Pole was 69 years old and was in a dilapidated condition. It took about 45 minutes for fire brigade personnel to bring out four buried under the debris.

The two killed have been identified as 33-day-old boy Altamas and 12-year-old girl Sanofer Banu. The five injured were identified as Rafiq Shaikh (34), Tavera Shaikh, Simran Shaikh (10), Shirin Rafiq (8) and Begamappa (70). All of them were being treated at VS Hospital.

The mishap took place around 7 am. According officials, the building was an old structure and had become very weak.  “The house was too old. In the construction, there was maximum use of wood. With the passing of time, the wood had weakened, thereby weakening the support to the house.

This led to the collapse of the building,” said additional chief fire officer of AMC, Rajesh Bhatt.

According to neighbours, the building was owned by Muzafar Gorekhan Pathan. The owner’s family stayed on the first floor.

The ground floor had been rented out to the family of one Maksud Ahmed.

When the building collapsed, the wall fell on the family of Rafiq Shaikh sleeping in the neighborhood. While Rafiq was seriously injured, his elder daughter Sanofer was killed in the mishap.

Rafiq also suffered a heart attack due to the shock.  The 33-days-old child, Altamas who died in the mishap, was Pathan’s great grandson.

Muzafar Pathan is an accused in the Radhika Gymkhana massacre case and is now lodged in the Sabaramati jail.
