Members of National Students Union of India, NSUI, on Saturday ransacked the newly built Sola Medical College building without having any concrete reason to do so.

According to the state president of NSUI, Gulabsinh Rajput, the demonstrations were held to protest against the possibility of converting the college into a self-financed medical college.

"Since the government has not made it clear that it will function as a government-run college, so in all possibility it will convert into a self-financed college," said Rajput, who believes that the students will then have to pay Rs36 lakh to pursue their MBBS degree.

However, Rs36 lakh is much more than the fees collected by the other self-financed colleges in the state which is Rs25 lakh at present.

This triggered anger among the NSUI members who then rushed inside the campus, created a ruckus, burnt posters and raised slogans.

Most of the student leaders gathered in the protest are not even registered with NSUI as officials members, sources said. Hardik Dodia, state general secretary of NSUI, expressed his disappointment over the ruckus created in the name of student welfare.

"I strongly condemn the act carried out by so-called NSUI members including Bhavinsinh Rathod, who holds no post in NSUI," said Dodia.

Sola Medical College has just received permission from Medical Council of India (MCI) to start the MBBS programme with 150 seats from this year. But some NSUI members and non-members 'fear' that it will not be a government college.

However, the government has not made any official announcement regarding it yet.

State health minister Jaynarayan Vyas strongly condemned the NSUI for ransacking the college premises and demanded an apology from them. In a press release issued by him, the minister said the intent of these workers who came in brand new cars without number plates to vandalise the college, is all the more unpardonable.

He also said that the MCI has just given the permission to start the college, so the decision to make it self financed or a government run college is yet to be taken. Sola police also registered a complaint against 20 unidentified men.
