A full-fledged National Security Guard (NSG) Commando unit will become operational in Chennai shortly, a top police official said on Sunday. The commandos are expected to arrive by next week and they would be accommodated in temporary structures for the time being at Police Training College in Ashoknagar, Tamil Nadu DGP KP Jain told reporters here.

Once the new building is completed, all the trained commandos would be shifted there, he said. Inaugurating the new building for Saravanampatti police station here, Jain said the department has recently purchased a hi-tech boat at a cost of Rs 2.1 crore for surveillance in coastal areas. Another 12 out of required 24 boats would be added in six months for the 12 coastal police stations, he added.

On modernisation, Jain said it was an ongoing process and the Centre was allocating funds for it annually. The department fully utilised Rs 51 crore given by the Centre
for this purpose last year, he said. Stating that crime and accident rates were on the rise in the state, he said that steps would be taken to contain it.
