Jeet Chandreshbhai Patel, a 14-year-old student of Swaminarayan Gurukul (SGVP), was kidnapped on Wednesday night. His abductors have demanded Rs50 lakh for his safe release. The boy, who is an NRI, was abducted just one day before he was to leave for Canada where his parents Chandresh and Jigna stay.

He was staying with his aunt, Anjuben, who lives in Urvashi Complex, Hiravadi in Bapunagar area. According to Anjuben, Jeet had gone out at around 8 pm on Wednesday to meet friends. He had an expensive mobile phone with him. At 9:15 pm, Anjuben received a call from an unidentified man who said he had the boy in his custody and would release him only if his family paid up Rs50 lakh.

Anjuben immediately contacted a relative, Mehul Patel, who rushed from his residence in Pallavi Society, also in Bapunagar. The two rushed to the Naroda police station where they lodged an official complaint.

Jeet used to be a boarder at SGVP till three months back. He later shifted to his aunt’s place, a school official told DNA. The boy had just received his school leaving certificate and was getting ready to fly off to Canada.

Police inspector GH Gohil of the Naroda police station told DNA that they had registered a case of kidnapping. “A gang of youths in Naroda may be involved in the crime, but we cannot say anything with certainty right now. The crime branch is assisting us in our investigation,” Gohil added.

According to an SGVP source, Jeet had enrolled at the school this academic year. “But he quit boarding and became a day-scholar,” the source said. “He used to commute by the school bus.” Anjuben could not be contacted. Jeet’s other family members whom DNA contacted said they had nothing to say in the matter.
