NRGs in celebration mood

Nearly 1,500 NRGs from more than 20 countries will celebrate Gujaratihood in the fourth Vishwa Gujarati Parishad (VGP) starting from January 22.

Nearly 1,500 NRGs from more than 20 countries across the globe will celebrate Gujaratihood  in the fourth Vishwa Gujarati Parishad (VGP) organised by Vishwa Gujarati Samaj (VGS), starting from January 22 at the Ahmedabad Education Society ground, Vastrapur. Most of the VGP delegates have arrived in the city and on Thursday they spoke to the media.

Krishnakant Vakharia, president of VGS said, "This is a celebration of Gujarat's pride and spirit that has spread its tentacles across the world. This event will be a mirror of the cultural, social and business entrepreneurship of Gujaratis living abroad and their connection with their motherland. Many Gujarati organisations will be celebrating the golden jubilee in the US, UK, Oman and other countries. Delegates from 20 countries and 22 states in the country will be participating in the event."

He added: "As Gujaratis have always been connected with their homeland, we will also appeal to them to contribute to the social and cultural development of Gujarat."

Kirit Patel, president of Friends of Gujarat organisation in New Jersey, US will be celebrating Swarnim Gujarat on June 11-12, 2010 in New Jersey. He said, "We are organising this celebration in association with the state government and VGS. We want to show the culture of Gujarat to our young generation, who were born in America. The programme will have traditional Gujarati events like dayro, plays and Gujarati food. We will also showcase the tradition of living in a joint family."

Naren Patel, vice-president of VGS Chicago, will be organising the golden jubilee programmes on May 1 in Chicago. He said, "There are 28-32 different Gujarati organisations in Chicago and all of them have come forward to celebrate the occasion. Though we have not demanded any government help, the Indian consulate in Chicago has offered to sponsor cultural events."

Chandrakant Chothani, vice-president of VGS Oman, said, "Muscat
Gujarati Samaj will be celebrating Swarnim Gujarat on May 6 in Muscat. Gujarat and Oman have a 500 years old relationship with each other."
