It seems to be a case of once bitten twice shy as far as the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) is concerned.

The apex body has tightened entry norms for the extra ordinary general meeting (EGM) to be held on April 10. It should be noted that a criminal complaint was filed against three office bearers and two officials of GCCI for forgery during the EGM held on March 31, 2009.

The GCCI convened the April 10 EGM following the dictates of the high-powered committee chaired by Karsanbhai Patel. The members attending the meet will have to submit details about their membership by filling a form placed at the entry gate of the hall, said a released issued by GCCI. Moreover, the members have to sign in the register.

The photo identity card has also been made mandatory for the members to participate in the EGM. The members can show the I-card of the chamber or the driving licence or voters’ identity card.

“The chamber is becoming extra conscious this year after the blunder last year,” said sources. It should be noted that the chamber’s prestige is at stake following the forgery case filed against the president, senior vice-president, and then secretary (rural) and with two officials of the chamber.

The Gujarat Chamber Annyay Nivaran Committee had filed the criminal complaints. It is believed that the new steps are to stop the bogus members from participating in the EGM. Moreover, it will also make it clear which members have the authority to participate in the EGM on behalf of their companies. This time around proxy voting will also be not allowed.

“If the chamber had taken such a decision last year the whole controversy could have been avoided and the apex body of trade and commerce would not have found itself in such embarrassing situations,” said a source.

The chamber had informed the members about the EGM through SMS as well as had sent notices through post. However, some members are yet to get either of it.
