The banks of the Sabarmati river are all set to become safe jogging places. Open river banks, which are usually unsafe spots for kids to frolic, will soon be protected with railings. The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation (SRFDCL) has invited bids to secure the river banks on the west from Gandhi Bridge to Sardar Bridge and protect staircases that lead to the promenades with steel railings.

The flooring of the promenades will also thus improve with the concrete and kota stone that will replace the present cement floor, leaving space for tree pits. The walkways will also have steel benches for seating space so that denizens can relax near the river bank.

“We have asked the work tenders to come up with railings at the river banks and stair cases so that it becomes safe for people to go near the river. Also, senior citizens need support to descend the stairs to access the riverside. We will develop the stretch from Gandhi Bridge to Sardar Bridge on the lines of the sample stretch prepared near the Subhash Bridge," a senior SRFDCL official said.

The official addedthat the work is estimated to cost around Rs 5 crore. Once the west bank is ready, the SRFDCL will start work on the east bank. The railings will also be constructed at the ramps for physically challenged people.

The SRFDCL is planning to start boating in the Sabarmati river by mid April and is also chalking out a scheme to start a floating restaurant near Sardar Bridge and Nehru Bridge. The AMC has shortlisted interested companies and is open to suggestions to give Amdavadis to best of floating restaurants.
