Checking a student's answer sheet might now just be a click away, if the Gujarat Technical University (FTU) has its way.

The university had taken up a pilot project, of checking answer papers through the e-click system, about a year ago for its post graduate (PG) students.

The experiment proved a success, with the students not raising doubts about the accuracy of the system.

The university now wants to make the system full proof, so as to implement it on a larger scale. For this, it is in the process of procuring a kind of software, that which is generally used by Cambridge and other universities in the UK.

The software is called Scoris, and it enables fool-proof checking. Once the software is procured, e-checking could become a reality, without any technical snags to disrupt it.

The registrar of the university, NN Bhuptani, said that with the success of the e-checking process they took up about a year ago at the PG level, they decided to expand the process. "The number that was targeted a year ago at the PG level was just a little above 2,000, and hence no difficulties were faced,'' said Bhuptani.

Once the software is installed, assessors can sit at home and simply need click on a given link.  "It will not be difficult as high-end scanners will make it possible to scan and upload the answer sheets,'' said an official at GTU.

The official pointed out that at present, the papers have to be collected from a particular place and dispatched to another, which often poses a problem. Many a times, teachers have to assemble at a pre-decided place to assess the papers. "All this will be done away with, once the online checking system is introduced,'' said officials.

Officials also said that in an informal survey of teacher's opinions, it was seen that most teachers were responsive and open to the e-checking system.

The official pointed out that even if the software is procured and installed by the next academic year, the project will be implemented phase-wise, beginning with the PG programmes in the management schools. "The numbers there are less and it is easier to experiment with those groups,'' the official said.
