The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's new green initiative of producing construction material from construction and demolition (C&D) waste will serve dual purposes — it will not only earn money for the AMC but also remove debris from the streets. The civic body has invited expression of interest from interested parties for setting up plants on public private partnership (PPP) model.

The C&D waste amounts to around 21% of the total 3,500 metric tonne waste collection in the city every day. With new developments in and around the city, the quantity of C&D waste generated in the city is increasing. It is the need of the hour to recycle C&D waste and produce value added building products.

The plant will help the civic body to solve the issue of indiscriminate dumping of construction debris on streets. Such waste in most of the cases is indiscriminately disposed of on the streets causing hindrance to traffic and obstruction in city cleaning process, said an AMC official.

AMC aims to take care of all the present construction and demolition waste in the AMC limit and process the same in a scientific way to develop various building products out of it. "The plant capacity of about 300 tons per day will have a specialised segregation system, debris handling system, crusher and other required units including a multiple section screening unit. The processed plant will then be used as raw material for producing wide range of eco and green building materials like brick, paver, blocks, etc.," said, an official.  AMC will provide land to private party at Rs1 per annum rent, while the company will make capital investment for the project.
