It seems not much headway has been made by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case. A summary of its investigation submitted before Gujarat high court shows that the SIT has merely completed some procedural formalities in the case.

The summary report states that the team has seized the vehicle logbook maintained by the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) between June 11, 2004 and June 16, 2004.

The report said that 21 logbooks have been seized for examination. It further said that the team has taken possession of the wireless messages procured by the CID and police control room between June 1 and June 16, 2004.

Apart from that, the report said that since the encounter in 2004, more information about the movements of the TATA Indica car, in which Ishrat was allegedly found along with Javed and others, could not be gathered.

The team has also said that it has taken statements of 63 witnesses pertaining to the car's movement from Mumbai, Pune, Nashk, Shirdi and Gujarat, but nothing concrete had come out of it.

The team has traced the movements of the Indica car in which Jahan and three others travelled between May 30, 2004 and June 16, 2004.

These include locations such as the octroi naka, petrol pump and highway. Incidentally, the team has said that guns used in the encounter have been sent to the FSL for examination. Even though the report has arrived, the SIT has failed to analyse it.

The team has also taken the statements of Shamima Kausar and Gopinath Pillai, the report said. The team has also said that in spite of advertisements being placed in various newspapers asking for help from people who know more about the case, no one has so far approached the team.

The summary prepared by JK Bhatt, IG Vadodara Range, and Ahmedabad JCP Mohan Jha, also said that an application was submitted by the team praying for time in the case and it is pending before the court.
