Mamata Banerjee’s title as the stormy petrel of the Trinamool Congress is in danger of being usurped by fellow party leader Kabir Suman.

Suman, an established folk singer who is nowadays more popular for his frequent outbursts against the party, was his usual dramatic self on Tuesday.

If the prelude was an SMS threat to Mamata late on Monday night that he was quitting, Tuesday saw full-scale drama.

At a hastily called press conference, an emotionally charged Suman was a one-act wonder — now, bellowing out his dislike of the ways some Trinamool leaders function, then, hissing out to a party worker not to cross his limits, yet at other times, with folded hands, putting forth his case before the media.

The Monday SMS read: “I am resigning my All India Trinamool Congress membership and Lok Sabha membership at once. Wish you good health. Good luck to you all.”

Lekin, Kabir Suman ko gussa kyu ata hai?

At the core of his anger lies his “humiliation” by party functionaries in South 24 Parganas, within whose limits falls Jadavpur, his constituency. He is known to have complained previously that party leaders in this region have not allowed him to use his MP local area development fund (MPLAD) according to his plans.

On Tuesday, he spat out that he had been repeatedly humiliated by party members. “I used to be told by Trinamool leaders in South 24 Parnagas to sit at home throughout the week and only sign the files relating to MPLAD that would be sent to me on Saturdays,” he revealed. He also said he had to bribe local leaders to use his MPLAD fund according to his blueprint.

“This is unacceptable… I am an elected representative of the people, not a slave of the party,” he said angrily.

At one point, the media conference was in danger of turning into bedlam when a group of Trinamool workers barged in to stop Suman. Some even requested him not to resign.

Suman, in his own way, has brought embarrassment to Trinamool by being “a Maoist sympathiser” and had expressed displeasure at ‘Operation Green Hunt’.

While Mamata said in Delhi on Tuesday “it’s an internal matter and we will discuss it within the party before taking a decision”, Trinamool’s chief whip in Lok Sabha Sudip Bandhopadyaya said: “If he puts in his papers, his resignation will be immediately accepted.”
