Three days after exodus of northeasterns, especially Assamese, began from Bangalore, the police have taken cognisance of a few targeted attacks and arrested three employees of a well-known supermarket for attacking a shopper hailing from that state on Friday afternoon.

Despite claims by top police officials and ministers that the rumours about people of Assam origin to be systematically targeted from next week were mischief played by some miscreants, the police are now taking these seriously especially after the Friday attack.

Also spurring them on are Intelligence inputs to senior police officials about a particular incident in Anepalya area of the city a few days ago. The incident allegedly involved a group of northeasterners being beaten up by members of a particular community while collecting funds for the Assam riot victims a few days ago.

Although both these incidents are no indication of a concerted effort to systematically target people from Assam, the city police are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that they are protected from any such attack, if any, in future.

Sources in the police department told DNA that a meeting among the police top brass on Thursday evening had taken cognisance of the lackadaisical attitude of some jurisdictional police who had refrained from registering cases when victims had approached them with complaints of being targeted and attacked in the past few days in Bangalore.

As part of the renewed measures, the Wilson Garden police acted swiftly and arrested three employees of the supermarket after the victim, Lai Lai Vaphai, alias Lilio, a resident of Wilson Garden, was beaten up on Friday afternoon by Abrar Ahmed 23, a sales team leader in the supermarket, Mohammed Salman, 22, and Maksood, 24, also employees of the same supermarket.

An investigating officer said the arrested trio, on being interrogated, had showed the police clippings of the Assam riots which had incited them into assaulting Vaphai.

The police have also intensified investigations into the Anepalya incident trying to verify whether the collectors of funds for Assam victims were targeted over any communal reasons or whether some other trivial reasons had led to them being attacked.
