Normal water supply restored in Delhi

'The situation is absolutely normal today. All our water treatment plants are functioning at their optimum level,' a senior Delhi Jal Board (DJB) official said.

Water supply in the city today returned to normal after remaining affected during the last two days as Jat agitators in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh stopped supply of water to Delhi from the Upper Ganga canal.
 
"The situation is absolutely normal today. All our water treatment plants are functioning at their optimum level," a senior Delhi Jal Board (DJB) official said.
 
South and East Delhi had faced massive water crisis after Jat leaders stopped raw water supply on Sunday to Delhi from Upper Ganga Canal which supplies 240 MGD to Sonia Vihar and Bhagirathi water treatment plants (WTPs).
 
These two WTPs cater to 40% water requirements of the city.
 
The agitating Jat leaders were demanding reservation in Government jobs.
 
Although protesters lifted the agitation yesterday and water from the Upper Ganga canal was released subsequently, the water treatment plants in the city became fully functional only this morning, DJB officials said.
 
Taking strong action to solve the problem, the Delhi government had taken up the issue with union home ministry, union water resources ministry, cabinet secretary KM Chandrasekhar.
 
Delhi chief secretary Rakesh Mehta has requested officials in UP Government to ensure that such an incident did not take place in future.
 
"Water is a fundamental right. You cannot just stop water supply whatever be the agitation," chief minister Sheila Dikshit had said yesterday.
