Nitin Gadkari’s offer to help rebuild the Babri Masjid at a spot away from the disputed site has been rebuffed by Muslim leaders.

Normally a factious bunch, there appears to be a rare unanimity on the issue among heads of various Muslim organisations.

The leaders have not only refused to give up their claims to the site, but also urged the BJP to wait for the court’s verdict on the issue. “We will  accept the court’s verdict, even if we lose. Is the BJP prepared to say the same?” Asaduddin Owaisi, a Lok Sabha MP, asked.

Owaisi’s stand  has also been echoed by the likes of Zafaryab Jilani and Syed Shabbuddin, two prominent members of the Babri Masjid Action Committee “There’s no question of giving up our claims on the issue. The matter is before the courts, we should wait for the verdict,” said Jilani.

Mehmood Madani, a Rajya Sabha MP and senior leader of the Jamat Ulema-e-Hind, has been at the forefront of the movement against terrorism  amongst Muslims. He refused to be swayed by the BJP’s offer. “First  of all, no Muslim can barter away  a mosque. Secondly it’s very difficult to trust the BJP and the RSS. After all, they broke their promise to the Supreme Court,” Madani said.

“The dispute relates to the site. First, they forcibly occupy the mosque, demolish it and now they say they will help us build a new mosque. There is no question of accepting their offer,” says Ahmad Bukhari, the Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid.

Syed Shabbuddin, the former diplomat-turned-politician said there was no question of considering the BJP’s offer. “The VHP had made a similar offer many years ago. We do not want an alternate site or a substitute, we  will never give up our claims to the site,” said Shabbuddin.
