Centre will not give clearance to any project that would harm the Western Ghats mountain region, Union environment and forest minister Jairam Ramesh said today.
Conservation of the Western Ghats, a bio diversity treasure house, was a matter of top priority for the government, he told reporters.
Ramesh was here to inaugurate the silver jubilee of declaration of Silent Valley as a National Park.
Centre would consider the demands of states like Kerala for special central support in view of their success in forest protection and afforestation programmes.
This factor would be taken into account while devolving funds to the states on the basis of the recommendations of the 13th Finance Commission, which would be submitting its report next month, he said.
