The post mortem report shows that he died due to cardiac arrest. No external injuries were found on his body as per the tests conducted.
The Jammu and Kashmir government Monday said the preliminary postmortem report of National Conference worker Syed Mohammad Yousuf showed no external injuries and the apparent cause of death was stated to be "cardio-respiratory arrest".
"The board of doctors in their preliminary postmortem report have certified that no external injuries were found on the body of deceased," J&K Home Secretary BR Sharma told reporters in Srinagar.
The 61-year-old NC worker had died on September 30 allegedly in police custody while he was being investigated for a cheating case by the state police's Crime Branch.
The deceased had allegedly taken Rs1.18 crore from two other NC workers for getting them berths in the Legislative Council.
Sharma said as per the death certificate issued by the hospital, the apparent cause of death is cardio-respiratory arrest.
"X-rays of the body show no abnormality and the time of the death in the report has been shown as less than 12 hours prior to the completion of the postmortem and handing over of the body at 7.20pm on September 30," he said.
Yousuf had been taken to police hospital here after he complained of abdomen pain after being taken into custody by Crime Branch, the Home Secretary said.
"The tests including ECG conducted on him at 8:23pm on September 29 was normal and the doctor attending to him informed the Crime Branch next morning that he could be taken back," he said.
"When the NC worker was being taken from the hospital, he complained of pain again and was advised an ultrasound test. Before the tests could be conducted, his blood pressure dropped and he was declared dead at 9:45am on September 30."
Sharma said the final opinion would be available only after the receipt of forensic science laboratory report.
The Crime Branch had registered an FIR under Section 420 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) at 10 PM on September 29, he said.
