The state government has claimed that the high speed diesel spillage in Mundra has not caused any damage to the local ecology. The officials claim that the amount of diesel spilled was also much lower than originally estimated.

Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) officials said that there was no spillage in the jetty or in the coastal areas.

"Our officers have visited the area and taken stock of the situation. There was no spillage found in the jetty or coastal areas. However, there was some spillage inside the pipeline's trench area," said captain SC Mathur, chief nautical officer of Gujarat Maritime Board.

Mathur also said that the Coast Guard had also sent its teams to the area where the high speed diesel spillage took place, but even they did not find anything.

"The spillage was of maximum 200 to 300 litre - not more," he said. SK Nanda, principal secretary, environment & forest department, said that the spillage had not caused any pollution or damage to the local ecology.

"The spillage was a minor one and it has not had any environmental impact," Nanda said.

The incident took place on June 17 while unloading a high speed diesel from the ship Jag Anchal at Mundra port. The spillage was caused due to leakage from the pipeline in the port trench area.

However, officials learnt about the incident only on June 21, four days after it took place. The authorities have directed Hindustan Petroleum (HP) to submit a factual report into the incident and to take remedial measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
