The city police and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) usually work hand-in-hand to prevent and demolish illegal constructions. However, one of these two parties recently had to prevent the other from committing the same unlawful act they together work to prevent!

Estate department officials of the AMC had to step in, to prevent the Gujarat Police Housing Board (GPSB) from initiating construction on a plot of land that hasn't been transferred in their name yet.

The plot of land involved, say the police, was given to them by a factory owner, for constructing a police station near Bibi talav in Vatva.

But the land, falling under town planning scheme 88, is yet to get final approval from the state government. Hence, the
plot cannot be transferred in the GPSB's name yet, from the factory-owner who donated the land to the police.

"Moreover, they did not even put in plan papers to get the construction sanctioned by the AMC," said a senior official in the estate department, citing the reasons why they summoned the GPSB to stop the construction that they had just begun.

"We have indeed received a letter from the AMC, raising objections regarding the construction of the building. We are going to write a letter requesting their approval for the same," said a police official who requested not to be quoted.

AMC officials said that in the TP scheme draft, the civic body has kept the plot under reservation to come up with public space.
"Now, as it is still a draft, the civic body cannot change the purpose/use of the land. And as of now, the construction of a police station on land reserved for public space is considered illegal. That is why, we had to summon them to stop the illegal construction," said an AMC official.

He also said that until TP 88 is cleared by the state government, the plot will not be transferred in the new owner's name.
