In the third such instance in four years, the National Institute of Design (NID) has suspended students who were caught on charges of ragging.
NID had banned three senior students from using hostel facilities and academic areas for allegedly ragging freshers, some time back. The incident was reported on June 13, barely a few days after commencement of the academic year.
The three senior students were banned from campus till the anti-ragging committee of the institute finished their inquiry. On Tuesday the committee decided to suspend two students for one semester and placed one student under probation for a year.
The institute received five complaints from parents and students in the initial days of the academic year, besides several calls regarding ragging.
According to Dr Vijaya Deshmukh juniors and the hostel wardens were questioned on the ragging issue. The former identified the culprits from photographs shown to them.
The committee investigated complaints filed by juniors and took cognizance of the received emails too. Proceedings were also recorded from June 20-27 while the committee spoke to students, whose names were revealed during the inquiry.
"Taking into consideration the entire view of the seriousness of the incident, level and degree of the abhorrent behaviour by senior students, the committee decided that the student from the Post Graduate Diploma Program in Design (PGDPD) will be placed under probation for one year. During this period his attendance, performance and behaviour will be monitored and in case he faults again, he will be immediately suspended," ruled Dr Deshmukh.
"As for the two students from Graduate Diploma Program in Design (GDPD), they have been suspended from the academic programme for one semester. Meanwhile, hostel facilities have been withdrawn for all," Dr Deshmukh concluded.
