NHRC sends investigation team to Lakhimpur to probe teenager's murder

The commission, taking suo motu cognisance of media reports, had yesterday decided to send its own investigation team for an on-the-spot inquiry into the incident.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today sent an investigation team to inquire into the alleged rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl at a police station in Uttar Pradesh.

The two-member team is being led by PS Rao, deputy superintendent of police in investigation division of NHRC.

The commission, taking suo motu cognisance of media reports, had yesterday decided to send its own investigation team for an on-the-spot inquiry into the incident.

The commission has also sought a detailed report from director general of police of Uttar Pradesh on the matter within four weeks.

Missing since Friday evening, the girl was found hanging from a tree inside the premises of Nighasan police station in Lakhimpur district. A fresh post mortem today confirmed she was murdered but could not arrive at the conclusion whether she was raped.
