Accusing the Rajasthan government of "deliberately playing down" Bharatpur incident where a clash between two communities claimed eight lives, an NGO today demanded a CBI inquiry into it.

The activists belonging to Anhad claimed that the death toll might be more and produced a CD made during a visit by the NGO's team to the violence-hit district yesterday.

On September 14, a clash broke out between the Gujjar and Muslim communities over a land dispute leaving eight dead, forcing the district authorities to impose curfew in the area.

"Even before we entered Bharatpur, our vehicle was stopped by police personnel led by a Deputy Superintendent of Police. It was after a lot of persuasion we were granted two hours to visit the clash site and what we saw there shocked us," claimed social activist Shabnam Hashmi who was part of the team.

"It was obvious why officials did not want us to visit the site. There were blood stains on the floor showing the bodies were dragged and they ended on balconies... the corpses were obviously thrown down," the activist alleged.

Noting that they do not want to speculate the number of dead but they are "much larger than the official figure", activist Ramzan Choudhary claimed, "What is also clear is that police are destroying evidence. People have gone missing. We want the CBI to take over the investigation.

"We heard stories of members of one community shooting members of the other community along with police personnel," said Navaid Hamid, member of the National Integration Council who was part of the team.

"Before we could investigate further we were rounded up and arrested and asked to leave the state," he claimed.

The NGO has also demanded suspension of senior police officials of the district and transfer of the district collector.
