New York state assembly proclaimed ‘Gujarat Day’ commemorating 50th anniversary of the state on June 9, 2010.
More than 2.50 lakh Gujaratis resides in New York state and they comprise more than 40% of Indian-American population overall. Gujaratis have greatly contributed through their entrepreneurial skills to US in retail business and professional services.
Recognising the contribution of Gujaratis in New York state and America in various fields, assembly members Rory Lancman, Grace Meng, and David Weprin proclaimed ‘Gujarat Day’ by offering proclamation to Dilip Chauhan and other Gujarati community leaders in presence of more than 100 assembly members. First time in the history of US, state assembly proclaimed ‘Gujarat Day’ during the running Assembly.
On this historic and joyous occasion assembly member Rory Lancman said, “I am honoured to represent members of the Gujarati community. Gujarati-Americans have contributed greatly to the state of New York, both by strengthening the economy as business owners and by enriching our culture by sharing their traditions. I am pleased to welcome Gujarati Community of New York to our state capitol.”
Gujarat has contributed a lot to India and to world by the great soul of ‘Mahatma Gandhi’ who is considered father of nation, for his non-violence principle, which help realise country’s independence and also inspired Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela and many other world leaders. On May 1, 1960, Gujarat was given statehood and in year 2010, it completed 50th year of its statehood.
Some of the prominent Gujarat-origin persons who attended the event included Dr Vitthal Dhaduk, Albert Jasani, HR Shah, Sunil Nayak, Suresh Jani, Manikant Patel, Hiru Patel, Virendra Patel, Jitendra Parekh, Kirit Patel, Shubhash Kapadia, Shobhana Patel, Ranjan Dhaduk. Dilip Chauhan - South Asian community leader, on receiving the proclamation said, “This Proclamation is not only proud of Gujaratis in US, but of 55 million Gujaratis back in India.”
