It’s now official. Asit Vora is the new mayor of Ahmedabad, while Darshana Vaghela is the new deputy mayor. Gautam Shah is the new leader of the BJP in the Ahmedabad municipal corporation (AMC). This was announced on Sunday at the newly-constituted AMC’s first general board meeting held in Mahatma Gandhi Hall of the civic body’s new headquarters in Danapith. Asit Vora and Darshana Vaghela, respectively, were elected mayor and deputy
mayor unopposed at the AMC meeting.

Congress corporator from Baherampura, Badruddin Shaikh, is the new leader of opposition in the civic body.

The ruling BJP had decided on the names of the new AMC office-bearers which were announced earlier on Sunday, after sealed covers were opened at around 10:30 am in the workers’ meeting at the BJP office.

Vora, who is the 26th mayor of Ahmedabad, was in the race for the post of mayor right from the day civic elections in the state were announced. But his elevation became a certainty only after the BJP made Thaltej councillor Bhupendra Patel chairman of the AMC’s standing committee.  Vora has been representing Maninagar ward for nearly 20 years as a corporator. He has served in different capacities at the AMC, including chairman of various sub-committees of the civic body such as health committee, octroi committee, tax committee, and road and building committee. He was also chairman of the AMTS in the first half of the tenure of the last AMC board and, in the second half, had held the powerful post of chairman of the standing committee.

Asit Vora holds a BSc (Technology) degree and is currently senior manager at Arvind Mills. He loves music and has been a singer for different musical groups that perform musical shows in the city.

He is conscious of his image as a manager with one of the reputed corporate houses of the city, which is why he does not get involved in petty matters.  Many corporators of the BJP consider him arrogant and do not enter his cabin unless it is necessary.
In an interview to DNA after his election as city mayor, Vora said he will work for a slum-free city. This was important as Ahmedabad would soon be a mega-city, he said.

Dharshana Vaghela belongs to the Scheduled Castes but the BJP had fielded her from Dhudheshwar ward against a general category seat. This is Vaghela’s second term as corporator. She is a principal at one of the schools in the city.

Gautam Shah, who has been named leader of the BJP in the AMC, has been representing Naranpura ward. His post is non-constitutional. His responsibilities will include co-ordination between corporators and office-bearers of the BJP in the civic body.

Both the mayor and the deputy mayor have been elected uncontested as the Congress did not field any candidate for either post. As per the BPMC Act, mayor and deputy mayor are elected at the general board meeting of corporations after every election.
