Memories of the plight of its alumni during the global financial meltdown have made the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) come up with yet another service for its former students.

The institute has decided to launch a special website to help those among its around 8,000 alumni, who may be looking for a job or new challenges. The portal is expected to go online before the start of final placements of this year’s batch in February.

The portal, a demonstration of which was given during the recently-concluded grand alumni reunion at IIMA, is a first-of-its-kind initiative by any premier B-school of the country. The website will function as a mediator between recruiters and the alumni.

The portal is designed keeping in mind the need for privacy as many alumni users of the website may already be employed somewhere. Alumni who want to use the portal will be given special IDs so that the authenticity of their academic and professional details can be checked by recruiters.

“When the Lehman Brothers collapsed triggering a financial meltdown, we noticed that many of our alumni, who had just started off in their careers, were facing a tough time,” said Prof Saral Mukherjee, chairperson, placements committee, IIM-A. “We always help our students by playing the mediator between them and corporate recruiters. But we felt helpless in the case of our alumni as there was little we could do to help them at the time.”

Mukherjee said that IIMA then decided to provide support to its alumni as well and provide them a platform and get the best deal for them from recruiters.      Turn to p14
