The Kutch university, set up only a decade ago, added one more feather in its cap when it got the Kutchi chair on Saturday, the only of its kind regional chair in varsities across the state.

"The idea is to provide a platform for scientific study and preservation of distinct culture, literature, language, handicraft of this district when it is now transforming itself into a tourism destination with Rannotsav and rapid industrialization.
 

This is in fact, a duty of a university," said Dr Shashirajan Yadav, vice chancellor of Krantiguru Shyamji Krishna Verma Kutch University. Yadav was delivering his presidential address at the inaugural function of the chair at the university campus.

Justifying the setting up of a separate university for Kutch and the chair, Yadav said that the hunger for knowledge in the district could be gauged from the fact the number of colleges in the region had phenomenally risen to with number of students rising up to 20,000. He said no student was required to go to Ahmedabad or Rajkot for postgraduate studies or even a doctorate degree.

He said the university had already achieved the set national ratio of 50% women for the year 2020 both at the under- and post-graduate levels.

Stating that his university had world class facilities for higher education, Yadav said that that Kutch University was also equipped with digitalized virtual class rooms, a process started by his predecessor Kanti Gor.

In his key-note address Dr Manoj Joshi, vice chancellor of the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University said that since the border district posses unique geographical features having trinity of sea, mountains and the Rann which had their own distinct cultural identity, they should be preserved with care and registered with
geographical identity (GI) trademark for world copy right.
 

In his inaugural address finance minister Vajubhai Vala said that the border district today was completely changed land and had become golden land where a decade ago officials posted here considered their posting here as punishment.

He said that money needed for the Kutchi chair would be given by the government if the rich Kutchis for any reasons did not come forward.

On this occasion top 10 achievers from various fields in Kutch were felicitated with 'Kutch Ratna Award" including Kutch poet Tejpal Dharsi Nagada and members of Suleman Juma family as the late Suleman, the ace Nagara player.
