The new Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower at Delhi International Airport will be delayed by one year and it will now be commissioned by November 2013, according to GMR Group which manages the airport.

"At present DIAL is finalising the tender documents for the construction of the tower. The works are to be awarded by end of June 2011. The timeline of November 2012 for the construction of ATC tower is not possible. As per the overall schedule, the ATC tower including installation and commissioning of equipment is to be completed by November 2013," DIAL told Airports Economic Regulatory Authority in reply to the consultation paper on the review of levy of development fee at the airport.

The airport had daily movement of about 265 flights when the present ATC was made operational in 1999.

After Terminal-3 became operational last year, the number of daily movement went upto 850 and has been steadily growing every year and would cross 1000 mark soon, according to Airports Authority of India (AAI) report.

"Going forward, it is foreseen that Indira Gandhi International (lGI) Airport would be handling about 1000 movements daily in the year 2011-12 which will cross 1500 traffic in 2015-16," the AAI said in its report submitted to AERA, adding that, DIAL will be required to maintain close co-ordination with AAI so that the entire work is carried out as per AAI requirements.

According to AAI estimates, the construction of new ATC would require an investment of Rs350 crore.

DIAL plans to build Terminals 4 and 5 at the later stages. If built, the entire international operations would be shifted to these two terminals, whereas the new terminal 3 would handle all the domestic operations.
