Ahmedabad: If you envied the ladies special coach facility in cities like Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore, here's some good news for you. Ahmedabad is all set to join the league with the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) starting the luxurious ladies special coach service from Thursday.
Interestingly, the ladies special AMTS coach for the women will also be driven by women. As a pilot project, the AMTS is launching only one bus on the Vasna-Chankheda route. Deputy mayor Kalpana Bhatt will inaugurate the service on Thursday after which all the ladies corporators will take a ride in the bus.
Chairman of AMTS Pravin Patel told DNA that they have conducted a detailed study of passenger trip on the route from Vasna to Chandkheda before launching the facility. "There are around 1.10 lakh passengers commuting in the route from Chandkheda to Vasna, and according to the estimates, of the total commuters around 40 per cent are women," said Patel. For the time being, the service would be launched only during the peak hours, and if successful it would be run with increased frequency.
"Ladies face a lot of problem while commuting, like physical harassment and difficulty in securing space in crowded buses. Launching the ladies coach facility will prove to be very beneficial as it would assure hassle-free commuting for women," said Bhatt.
Patel borrowed the concept from a study tour they made to Bangalore and Chennai recently. "As of now, we are launching only one coach, but will introduce more such coaches if the project turns out to be a success," said Patel.
Keeping in mind the comfort factor, the AMTS bosses have decided to launch a luxury coach. "The luxury coach will be equipped with a LED screen displaying the next stop, while there will be another LED screen on front side showing the bus route," Patel said.
