ShareSrinagar: Climate change is now visible in Jammu and Kashmir and the state should formulate policies to tackle it locally, a Jammu and Kashmir minister said today.
"There is an immediate need to take both preventive and corrective measures to save environment and natural resources," Jammu and Kashmir forest and environment minister Mian Altaf Ahmad said while addressing a three-day International Conference on Climate Change, Glacial Recession and Livelihood.
He said the effects of climate change are already being felt and if remedial measures are not initiated in time, the generations to come will have to pay a heavy price for it. "State specific issues for the redressal of climate change and melting glaciers need to be looked into and action needs to be formulated towards mitigation," he said.
The minister added that the state, along with global efforts, should formulate policies to tackle climate change locally, and the state mechanism needs to be formulated for micro level solutions.
He set out the basic framework for having a climate change mitigation programme in the state.
