The NCP today demanded reservations for Muslims in government jobs and educational institutions.

Flaying ABVP for opposing Bihar government's move to open the state branch of Aligarh Muslim University in Kishanganj district, NCP national general secretary Tariq Anwar told reporters, "There should be reservations for Muslims in government jobs and educational institutions in the light of the recommendations made by Justice Ranganath Mishra and Sachar Committee reports...(this) quota should be decided on the basis of population."

Anwar also hailed the March 25 Supreme Court's interim order permitting Andhra Pradesh to provide 4% reservation for backward Muslims in jobs and education.

However, the apex court while passing the order had referred the issue to a Constitution bench to examine the validity of the impugned Act.

With the passing of the order, 14 backward Muslim groups in Andhra Pradesh would be eligible for the reservation.

Anwar also termed the decision of chief minister Nitish Kumar to provide residential and security coverage to all former chief ministers of Bihar as "unjustified" and demanded immediate recall of the bill.
