New Delhi: The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) is not enthused by the submission of the Liberhan Commission report.
"The report doesn't cheer Muslims. The fact that it took 17 years apart, there is a feeling among Muslims that the suggestions would meet the same fate as that of the other commissions -- they will gather dust," chairman Mohamed Shafi Qureshi said on Wednesday.
Qureshi's angst stems from the fact that recommendations made by most other committees that probed communal riots have not been implemented.
"We keep talking about speedy implementation of proposals made by committees, be it Srikrishna, Sachar or Liberhan. Unfortunately, nothing really happens at the grassroots. While there can be no cure for the wounds of riot victims, the least that governments can do is speedy implementation of recommendations made by the various committees," he said.
Mocking at the demands for implementation of the Liberhan Commission recommendations, Qureshi said, "Look at what happened to the Srikrishna report. It probed the events that led to the communal violence post Babri demolition. What has come off it?
He said in the Lok Sabha poll, there was a visible shift of the Muslim vote towards the Congress and with this overwhelming mandate of the community in its favour, the UPA government couldn't let Muslims down.
