Abdul Salam Reshi, a key witness in the alleged killing of National Conference activist Syed Mohammad Yousuf, has broken his silence claiming that the latter was hale and hearty when he was taken to another room in the chief minister’s residence but was vomiting and unable to speak when he was being taken to the crime branch headquarters in a police vehicle.

Yousuf, who was reportedly close to the Abdullah family, died in the  police custody last Friday after Omar Abdullah handed him over to the crime branch. Two NC activists — Reshi being one of them — had complained against Yousuf that he had taken Rs1.14 crore from them promising berths in the ministry and the Legislative Council.

“Yousuf had told Omar Sahib that he would talk to him in separate room when the money issue came up. However, Omar insisted him to speak in this room (where we were)… Then Haji wanted him to wait till Farooq (Abdullah) returns. But when Omar asked him what his father had to do with the issue, Haji said he had handed over the money to Farooq,” Reshi told DNA.

“On hearing this, Omar threatened to hand him over to the crime branch. To this, Haji said if that was the case then he would reveal the truth there itself,” Reshi said, and added: “Then Omar left in a huff and after 20 minutes Yousuf was taken to another room.”

After half an hour Reshi was asked to report to the Crime headquarters. “When I boarded the police Gypsy I saw Yousuf in a bad condition, unable to talk. By the time we  covered 100 yards, Haji started vomiting, and it was laced with blood,” he added.
Reshi says he was earlier with the Congress and the PDP. He contested the 2008 assembly election as an independent after he was denied ticket by the PDP.

“I got 6,000 votes and was defeated by the Congress candidate and (now) school education minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed. He was later contacted by Haji Syed Mohammad Yousuf who motivated him to join the National Conference in 2009,” Reshi said.

Reshi said that on September 29 he was called by the chief minister office for a meeting with Omar Abdullah. “Let me put on record that I did not meet Omar in the assembly complex as the government is claiming. You can check the records I did not go there. I was called by the CM’s private secretary to meet Omar which I did,” he said.
