Indian Navy and other stakeholders in maritime domain are playing a proactive role to avoid a recurrence of 26/11 type terror attacks, president Pratibha Patil said today.

"Terror attacks last year in Mumbai are a grim reminder of the harm that can be perpetuated through the use of sea route by elements inimical to India," the president said, addressing sailors and officers aboard India's lone aircraft carrier INS Viraat.

Navy and other stakeholders are bringing about a synergy, and establishing standard operating procedures to prevent recurrence of 26/11 type attack, Patil said.

The government is committed to the process of modernising the Indian Navy in keeping with the changing requirements of the 21st century, the supreme commander of India's armed forces said.

The presence of Indian Navy's warships in piracy-hit Gulf of Aden has instilled the sense of confidence in the shipping industry, she said.

Earlier, on arrival aboard INS Viraat, the president inspected the guard of honour, and witnessed steam past by Naval warships and submarines, and also a fly past by Sea King helicopters and Sea Harrier aircraft.
