Nationwide strike cripples banking operations in Andhra Pradesh

According to Bank Employees Association as many as 35,000 employees from various public and private banks are taking part in the strike called by central trade unions.

Services in the banking and insurance sector in Andhra Pradesh were severely affected today as thousands of employees participated in the day-long nationwide strike protesting price rise, violation of labour laws and disinvestment of PSUs.
 
According to Bank Employees Association as many as 35,000 employees from various public and private banks are taking part in the strike called by central trade unions.
 
"Except for employees of 22 private and PSU banks, all others joined today in various protests across Andhra Pradesh. Transactions worth Rs15,000-20,000 crore have been stalled," BS Rambabu, general secretary Andhra Pradesh Bank Employees Federation told PTI.
 
In the insurance sector, as many as 9,000 employees of LIC and 5,000 of GIC participated in the bandh.
 
"Operations in 183 branches of LIC and more than 200 branches of GIC were affected due to the strike," K VenuGopal, general secretary, All India Insurance Employees Association said.
 
Meanwhile, mining and transport activities came to a halt at Singareni Collieries- the state owned coal mining company as scores of workers participated in the strike.
 
Air and road traffic was also hit in the state.
 
According to officials at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport here, two Kolkata-bound flights of Kingfisher and Indigo airlines were cancelled.
 
However, all Air India flights were on schedule, its spokesperson said.
