It appears that chief minister Narendra Modi does not want to leave any sector untouched while thinking of industrialising the state. This came to light during his recent one-week stay in Kutch for two mega events - Rannotsav 2009 and Chintan Shibir.

“I have in my mind two untouched sectors: production of defence equipment, and production of equipment for keeping environment clean. In fact, I have already begun my study on this and soon the government will come out with a new policy,’’ Modi said while laying the foundation stone for the country’s largest manufacturing plant for production of power plant equipment. The plant will be jointly set up in Mundra Port SEZ by Pune-based Bharat Forge Limited and foreign company Alstom at a cost of Rs2,100 cr.

He said at present the country had to spend huge foreign exchange in purchasing war planes and tanks. He said the country had talent and capability to produce such defence equipment not only for its own defence, but even for export.

Pointing out that when youths from the state were not joining the armed forces in large number, this (production of defence equipment) would be the state’s contribution to the defence of the mother land. He said there would be an exclusive policy and a company for this.

He said this could be done with foreign collaboration using “our own engineering industries and talent”. He said he had asked the engineering colleges and the universities to think of introducing special courses for manufacturing defence equipment. He said once the policy on this sector was ready, his government would be inviting industrialists from all over the country to set up their units for defence equipment.

He said that another new area was production of equipment for keeping environment clean when the world was facing environmental problems. Modi went around the Adani port and its nearby mega power plant and was impressed with its fast development.
