Chief minister Narendra Modi on Friday visited some of the villages affected by Thursday night's 5.3 magnitude earthquake, and took stock of the situation. The CM also ordered a survey into the damage caused by the quake.

Officials said that the CM toured Malia Hatina and Talala talukas of Junagadh district, which bore the brunt of the quake. He visited Lahudi, Jalandhar and other villages, during which he met some of the injured and wished them speedy recovery.

While ordering a survey to assess the extent of the damage, he noted that fortunately there was no loss of lives. He also said that the work to know the extent of damage caused by the quake would be done on war footing.

According to officials, twelve people were injured in the quake, who were hospitalised and are out of danger. Around fifty kucha houses in Lahudi, Jalandhar, Khorsa and other villages were also damaged in the quake. The state rushed rescue and medical teams to the affected villages.

Besides Saurashtra, tremors were also felt in Ahmedabad, Surat, Valsad, and other places.

"We are assessing the damage which is mainly in some ten villages along the periphery of Gir forest," Junagadh district collector, AM Parmar, said.

Modi learnt about the earthquake late last night on his return to Gandhinagar after his Sadbhavna fast at Navsari. The CM alerted the entire administration and directed the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority staff to reach areas where the maximum damage had taken place. He directed that all possible rescue and relief assistance be provided to the quake-affected.

A group of Congress leaders, led by Talala MLA Bhagwan Barad, also visited the quake-affected villages and assured all help in relief and rehabilitation measures.
