In a seminar held in Surat, Maulana Syed Mahmmud Madani, president of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind claimed that Muslims are seen as a problem in India and are side-tracked on every important occasion. This comes in the wake of the vice-chancellor of Darul-ul-Uloom, Maulana Ghulam Vastanvi, making controversial remarks vis-a-vis Muslims in Gujarat and CM Narendra Modi.

Madani was in Surat on Saturday to address a seminar, 'Husule Insaaf ane Komi Ekta', organised by the Surat branch of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind at Rajshree Hall. He claimed that in the Independence struggle Hindus and Muslims fought together against the British rule, but post-independence the two communities created differences between themselves and now Muslims in the country are considered as a liability.

"When Jamiat Ulema was formed in 1919, its aim was to achieve independence for India and not form Muslims. Mohammad Ali Jinnah to ask for an independent state for Muslims which is now Pakistan but the situation now in India is such that the Indian Muslims are treated as a burden by their fellow countrymen. Islam never allows partition of any country," said Madani.

"A handful of families own and manage 96% of the country's reserves and deprive the country's poor of their rights. Corruption has become rampant in society …there is no one who can bring things back in order," added Madani.

Other eminent scholars from both the communities participated in the seminar. Maulana Faiyaz Laturi claimed that the condition of Muslims in India is terrible and that they require education and reservation in all sectors.

"Situation is such that if Muslims want to open a school in India, they have to suffer a lot and experience pain. This should change immediately. Something should be done to bring the Muslims in the mainstream," Laturi added.

Mahant Ramvilas Das, Swami Ambrishanand, Mahant Vishwarnand, Sitaramdas Bapu, Maulana Hakkimuddin Kasmi and Maulana Ibrahim Tarapuri attended the seminar.
