Deoband (UP): A top Muslim body today asked members of the community not to recite Vande Mataram and supported seminary Darul Uloom's edict which opposes any prayer involving the song.

"The fatwa of Darul Uloom (opposing recitation of Vande Mataram) is correct," said one of the 25 resolutions passed by Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind today at its 30th general session here in presence of Union home minister P Chidambaram.

Darul Uloom's fatwa department had issued the edict in 2006 describing recitation of Vande Mataram as anti-Islamic. "The judgement of the Supreme Court also clearly states that nobody can be compelled to sing Vande Mataram," said the resolution, which was adopted by over 10,000 clerics from across the country. It also expressed deep concern over the communal hatred and violence exploiting the issue.

"We love and respect the mother, but do not worship her...The house demands that the issue of Vande Mataram should not be deliberately raised for causing communal discord and threat to law and order," said the resolution, which sparked a sharp reaction from other groups which burnt the effigy of Darul Deoband at some places.

Darul Uloom's fatwa department had issued the edict in 2006 describing recitation of Vande Mataram as anti-Islamic. Senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi said the resolution is not acceptable and it is against Constitutional provisions. The resolution also condemned the exploitation of Vande Mataram for targetting Muslims.

"Patriotism does not require singing of Vande Mataram. We love our country and have proved this several times, but Vande Mataram violates our faith in monotheism that is the foundation of Islam," the resolution said.

The Jamiat also attacked the UPA government and asked it to stop making "lucrative promises" to minorities and immediately implement the recommendations of the Sachar committee report.

The body also adopted a series of resolutions asking the UPA government to stop interfering in minorities affairs, including tampering with madrasa education system.

"We demand from the UPA government to implement the Sachar Committee and the Ranganath Commission recommendations so that maximum number of people are benefited," a resolution said. Jamiat opposed the government's plan to set up a Central Madrasa Board, saying it was yet "another attempt by the government to interfere in the madrasa education system.

"The government must avoid setting up Madrasa Board," it warned. It also demanded government to make a law against communal riots and to secure Waqf properties. The resolutions opposed amendment in article 377 and 33% reservation for women, calling it "unnecessary" as well as "unacceptable".

The Jamiat further condemned suicide bombings saying it take lives of innocent people. Its national vice president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the presence of Chidambaram at the programme "gave legitimacy to the resolution...it is a matter of concern."

The concluding day of the three-day session was also attended by CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury and yoga guru Ramdev, who demonstrated his skills to thousands of Muslim clerics. Darul Uloom had issued a fatwa in favour of yoga after some clerics last year banned Muslims from practising it.

Do not set up the madrasa board indeed! The same should be said about the devasom board for temples in Kerala, which is run by atheist commies who rule Kerala.

Please tell Deobandis that India is ruled by democracy not by Sharia. Why are they trying to divide the nation on the basis of religion? Is this real secularism of Muslims? This is same way of Jinnah, who used to called India a Hindu country and curse the Congress as a Hindu party. What is the stand of Sonia's Congress on this issue? We Indians condemn this fatwa of Deobandis. It reveals anti-national sentiments of Muslims. Rather than this fatwa, Deobandis should address problems like economic, educational backwardness of the community. Even if they recite Vande Mataram, how is Allah going to punish them? How can mother and motherland be different? I think the debate should not be focused on this particular fatwa but on the larger issue, ie 'Islam and nationalism'. It is often seen that Indian Muslims come out protesting on streets on issues that do not concern them directly, such as Palestine or even the war in Iraq. Deobandis should address why all Indian jehadis arrested in bomb blasts in major Indian cities belongs to the Deobandi Tabliqee Jamat and Alhe Hadis, and not Barelivs.

Criticisms are always welcome. But here this community has double standards. They can't utter a word against other countries where the morning azaan is not permitted, but shout from the top of the world about it in India, conducting prayers on the road. They issue fatwas to kill a foreignor who defames or writes something against their prophet, but at same time, when Mr MF Hussain paints nude picture of Hindu goddesses, all are silent.
When the Babri structure was demolished, it created riots all over in India, but when they demolished a Buddhist temple, all are silent. When will they start seeing this and stop being hypocrites?

It is a pity that our Muslim brothers refuse to amalgamate into something that is India; which is something that cannot be done by keeping religion above your nationalism. At a time when Pakistan is pulverising its own Muslims, it is time for Indian Muslims to come into mainstream and refuse to listen to such mullahs, who have nothing but their own axe to grind.
