Mumbai serial blasts: West Bengal condemns the blasts

A minute's silence was observed in West Bengal today, in memory of those who died in last evening's serial blasts in Mumbai, with chief minister Mamata Banerjee saying that West Bengal shared the grief of the people of the metropolis.
    

"If Mumbai weeps, Bengal also weeps. We fully share the agony and sufferings of the people of Mumbai. We pray that people of Mumbai get the strength to overcome the shock," the chief minister said.
    

"I convey my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and pray for the quick recovery of the injured," Banerjee said at a function here.
    

Meanwhile, governor MK Narayanan summoned director general of police Naparajit Mukherjee and Kolkata police commissioner RK Pachananda presumably to discuss security issues in the state following the Mumbai blasts.
    

A red alert was issued last night here with security strengthened at the airport, railway stations, the port, markets, shopping malls and public places.
    

A state-wide alert was also in place with vigilance on government property and vital installations. Vehicles were also being checked, the police said.
