DMDK today said the Tamil Nadu government should await the Supreme Court's verdict before talking to Kerala to find a solution to the vexed Mullaperiyar dam issue.

There was no point in talking to Kerala now and the state should wait for the apex court's verdict, DMDK founder and leader of the opposition in the state assembly, Vijayakant told reporters after meeting Governor K Rosaiah.

He said in the past talks with neighbours on inter-state water disputes proved futile, referring to failure of talks between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka on the Cauvery issue.

He submitted a memorandum to the Governor asking him to use his good offices to prevail upon the Centre to tell Kerala to raise the dam storage level from 136 to 142 feet as per a Supreme court order.

He submitted another memorandum demanding that the Centre renegotiate the 1974 India-Sri Lanka treaty under which Kachatheevu was ceded to the island nation and help Indian fishermen allegedly subjected to "hardships" by Sri Lankan Navy.

Vijayakant was accompanied by his party MLAs and this was the first meeting with Rosaiah since he took over as Governor two months ago.

Farmers representing tThe 'Periyaru Vaigai Irrigation Planning Committee' said they would hold ademonstration in front of the District Collector office here on December 7, to protest the Kerala Government's stand on building a new dam to replace the existing one.

Talking to newsmen at Madurai, M.Meenakshisundaram, President of the Committee, which had 4.5 lakh farmers as its members, claimed that all committees that inspected the dam, including Central PWD committee, had certified that the dam was strong and there was no need to decommission it.

Central government should take steps to implement the Supreme court order of increasing the dam level to 142 feet, he added.

The farmers said now they relied only on the verdict of the supreme court, and were prepared to abide by whatever judgement was given, and wanted to know if the Kerala government would abide by it.
