A cyclist came close to the airstrip while Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav's aircraft was landing at Safai in Uttar Pradesh but authorities today said there was no threat to the plane.

The incident happened yesterday when Yadav was on his way to Mainpuri from Lucknow. The cyclist was later identified as a member of the ground staff.

The SP chief termed the incident as "serious".

"Safai incident is a serious incident, but the state government officers manage the airstrip and they also look after the security. We cannot do anything about it," he toldreporters here today.

However, Safai sub-divisional magistrate (protocol) Shanker Mukerji denied there was any threat to Yadav's aircraft during landing.

The cyclist Anantram was actually on a patrol duty to prevent stray animals from entering the airstrip and was nearly 70m away from the area, he said.

The SDM claimed SP workers, who were standing at a distance, misunderstood that Anantram was moving on the airstrip.

No complaint was lodged either by the pilots or any other person in this regard, he said.

Mulayam took an indirect dig at chief minister Mayawati, "What we can do in this regime, she (Mayawati) is the queen and we all are her people."
