Life had always been tough for Madhu Parmar, 48, but it only got worse when her son lost his life in an honour killing. Parmar’s son, Shyam was killed as he dared to elope with a girl from his community despite the objection of her parents and brothers.

Parmar had earlier lost her husband in an accident, followed by her elder son. She then lost her youngest son Shyam after family members of the girl, who he eloped with, killed him.

Shyam was romantically involved with Kusoom alias Munni, whom he had met at a family function some years ago. However, both of them were married. Shyam divorced his wife and shifted to Bhuj, to be closer to Munni’s place in Kutch.

The couple eloped in May and stayed in Ajmer for a month. On June 16, the couple landed in the city at Shyam’s residence. Somehow Munni’s family came to know about it, following which they reached Shyam’s residence and kidnapped the couple from there.

According to police investigation, Shyam was then killed and his body thrown in a lake in Sanand.

On August 3, Sanand police notified Naroda police about the  body of a youth in a from a lake at Koda village near Sanand. The body was identified as Shyam’s and the police then registered a murder case against Munni’s family.

The Naroda police later arrested Munni’s brothers - Suresh Chawda, Ramesh Chawda, Ramesh Waghela and Santosh Chawda. The accused were produced before the metropolitan magistrate court on Sunday, where they were sent to police custody until August 12.

Speaking with DNA, Naroda police inspector GH Gohil said, “It was revealed that Shyam had seduced other girls and had relations with them, for which several cases had also been registered. However, Munni and Shyam were not married, but were in a live-in relationship.”

Police sources alleged that a few months ago, he had taken a girl from the same community and got her married to the person she loved.

According to the complaint lodged by Parmar with the Naroda police station, Shyam was kidnapped on June 17. Madhu, after the incident, tried to search her son but found nothing.

And when she went to register the case, her pleas went unheard. Madhu, with the help of advocate Ankur Garange and Deepak Indrekar, had written an application followed by which police registered a case against the family members of Munni. The FIR was registered even later after a fight with the administration on July 22.
