Stepping up its two pronged strategy — developmental action along with security offensive — against the Maoists, the Centre has added 18 new districts to the existing 60 districts under Integrated Action Plan (IAP) and is proposing to add 20 more districts under the Security Related Expenditure (SRE) scheme.

The decision has nothing to do with current successes the security forces have had against the Maoists in terms of neutralising or apprehending their leaders, sources said, “it is in line with Centre’s decision to go for a long haul to eradicate the problem from the root.”

The 18 new IAP districts that have been given cabinet nod include six districts (Vizag, East Godawari, Warangal, Karimnagar, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram) from Andhra Pradesh, three (Khunti, Ranchi rural and Giridih) from Jharkhand, three (Ganjam, Nayagarh and Jajpur) from Orissa, two (Bankura and Purulia) from West Bengal, two (Chanduali and Mirzapur) from Uttar Pradesh and two (munger and Kaimur) from Bihar.

“The new districts will be given Rs30 crore to undertake developmental activities,” a senior government official said.
Among the 20 new districts proposed by the ministry of home affairs to be covered under the SRE , Muzaffarpur, Sheohar, Vaishali, Banka, Lakhisarai, Begusarai and Khagaria from Bihar, Dhamtari, Durg, Raipur, Mahasamund are from Chhattisgarh, Kalahandi, Bargarh, Bolangir and Naupada are from Orissa, Dumka, Deoghar and Pakur are from Jharkhand, Aheri in Maharashtra and Birbhum in West Bengal.
