The southwest monsoon advanced into Maharashtra on Thursday, reaching the southern parts of Konkan and Goa as well as central Maharashtra.
The Indian Meteorological Department, Pune, said the monsoon is likely to reach the city and Mumbai in the next 48 hours.
The normal date for the onset of the monsoon over Pune and Mumbai is June 7 and 10, respectively. This year, the southwest monsoon hit Kerala on May 31, earlier than expected.
Speaking to DNA, IMD director general HR Hatwar said, "The southwest monsoon reached Ratnagiri on Thursday. Conditions are favourable for its advancement into some more parts of Maharashtra."
According to Hatwar, the southwest monsoon also advanced into parts of the central Arabian Sea, some parts of north interior Karnataka, most parts of south interior Karnataka, and some more parts of Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra Pradesh.
Hatwar said, "A low pressure area persists over the west-central Bay of Bengal and its neighbourhood and is likely to strengthen the monsoon current as it moves towards Andhra Pradesh."
The IMD forecast widespread rain or thundershowers over Kerala, coastal Karnataka and Konkan and Goa in the next 48 hours.
