Mob torch police station, vehicles

A mob today set afire a police station and six vehicles after a student was crushed to death by a police van here today.

Police said an engineering student identified as Shakti Prasad Mohanty was hit by a police van while he was returning from college in a motorbike and died on way to hospital.

As the news of his death spread, students of the college took to the streets indulging in violence in which the local people also joined.
 
In the process, the mob torched four stationary trucks of a private aluminium company and two buses including one belonging to the state-run OSRTC. They also damaged some shops.
     
As police remained mute spectator to the violence, they set ablaze the town police station. No policeman, however, was injured. Damage to property was being ascertained, police said.
