In an unusual display of unity, the entire opposition in the state assembly slammed UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday for proposing a car for each MLA up to Rs20 lakh from the legislators’ discretionary development funds.

The opposition leaders said this would lead to misuse of funds meant for development. “It is people’s money and should be spent on the people,” said leader of Opposition Swami Prasad Maurya of the BSP. “The discretionary fund is meant for development works and spending it for buying a car would mean its misuse. If the CM wants to allot funds for buying cars for MLAs, he should think of some other ways and means,” he added.

Akhilesh Yadav, while speaking at the end of the discussion on the 2012-13 state budget, thanked the MLAs for the passage of the budget. As a token of thanks, he announced that the MLAs’ discretionary fund was being increased by Rs25 lakh to Rs1.50cr annually. He also declared that henceforth, every MLA would be allowed to buy a car costing up to Rs 20 lakh from this fund.

While the MLAs expressed happiness over the upward revision of the discretionary fund with the thumping of desks, immediately afterwards, they were up in arms against the proposal for buying cars from this fund.

Buying cars worth Rs20 lakh for the state’s 403 MLAs and 100 MLCs would cost the state exchequer over Rs100 crore.
