Ahmedabad: "When Michael Jackson died, I felt a sudden unexplainable silence inside me," said Ritesh Ajmeri, a young Amdavadi resident and a student of fine arts. It is a sentiment that wrapped Ahmedabad like a pall after the King of Pop's heart stopped beating. "I pulled out my collection of his albums and dusted them," Ajmeri said. By all accounts, of late dust has been lovingly thumped off scores of MJ albums in Ahmedabad. Indeed, the King is reigning over the music systems in the city again.
While some in Ahmedabad are retrieving MJ's works from the middling rungs of their music pile, others are thronging CD parlours and music stores. Paras Waghela, an attendant at a city CD library, Video Mirchi, said, "Since the day after the death of Michael, there has been a surge in the number of customers wanting his audio and video albums."
In normal circumstances, the demand for MJ's works was usually not elastic. But these days, 15 to 20 albums are being rented out every day by Video Mirchi. Some of the most commonly sought after albums include 'History', 'Dangerous', 'Bad', and 'Thriller'.
Chinmay Patel, of Devraj video library in Satellite, said, "Demand for Jackson's CDs has increased considerably in the past few days." He said that an increasing number of young people come looking for 'Thriller', 'Ghost' and 'Bad'. "These are his best works," Patel said.
Varun Rai, of Classic music store, said, "When a music icon dies, there's always a remarkable boost in the sale of their works because fans see this as a way to connect to a legend." Some fans, like Kush Panal, seek a connection with the King not just to pay tribute to music royalty but to a way of life. "I have been a MJ fan since the age of three," said Kush about the moonwalk. "I admire his boldness in life," he added.
