Sylvester Daniel, the key witness in the Sohrabuddin case lodged in the Vadodara jail escaped on Friday night, from a police convoy while he was been taken to be produced before a court in Udaipur. Late on Saturday night Sohrabuddin was caught by the police near Udaipur in Rajasthan.
Sources in CBI said that the investigating agency is worried, that the way in which Tulsiram Prajapati was killed could be repeated after the escape of Sylvester. Sources said that, the officials of Gujarat police killed Tulsi on the very next day of the news of his escape. “We are worried that he should not be found dead in a police encounter in the next few days,” sources said.
Sources familiar with the development said that the CBI is not happy with the way in which the state government is handling the security of the witnesses in the important cases like Sohrabuddin and Tulsiram encounter investigated by the CBI.
CBI sources said that even though the cases will not be affected due to the absence of Sylster, as his statement had been recorded under section 161 before the judicial magistrate.
“However, still we are concerned about its security, as his absence is surely a setback for the current investigations,” a source told DNA.
Sources said that, in the arrest of suspended IPS officer Abhay Chudasma and eventually Amit Shah, Sylvester’s statement had played very important role. “Chudasma was arrested on the basis of Sylvester’s statement recorded before the magistrate,” the source said.
Sylvester in his statement to the CBI had told that the money transacted during the firing at the office of popular builders was done on the behest of Chudasma. “Sylvester is the first one to say on record that Chudasma has a role to play in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case,” sources said.
Sylvester is considered to be the last man who knows many important facts in connection to the Sohrabuddin and the Tulsiram cases. Arrested on December 12, 2005 by the Gujarat ATS, Sylvester is a close aide of Sohrabuddin gang. Tulsiram was another member of this gang. After the death of Tulsiram in the alleged encounter, he feared that he could also be eliminated in a staged encounter as Tulsi. Being a member of the gang, and also one of the accused in the Popular firing case. Late last night Daniel, who was on the run, was caught by the police near Udaipur in Rajasthan.
