The bloated bodies of Arshad, 4, and Arman, 8 — neighbours missing from their Shakur Basti home since November 25 — surfaced in a water-filled trench in northwest Delhi on Tuesday. Their parents were convinced they had been kidnapped. Even the police had registered a case of kidnapping.

Some children who play in the park Arshad and Arman frequented discovered their bodies. “The children raised an alarm. The bodies were then fished out of the 5-feet-deep trench,” said a senior police officer. The bodies were sent to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital for post-mortem.

The police suspect the boys might have fallen into the trench while playing. Construction work was also going on in the park.

But the parents say the victims were first killed and then dumped into the trench. “We had searched the park earlier but did not find any thing. Our children were killed first and then thrown into the trench. The police are downplaying the incident,” Arman’s father Mohammad Ismail said. MCD commissioner KS Mehra has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
